About Our Program
Brooklyn Free Space is a cooperative preschool serving children ages 2 through 5 in Park Slope, Brooklyn. Our full-day programs provide children with a warm, engaging environment where they can build relationships, explore their interests, and learn through play.
At BFS, we believe children are naturally curious, capable learners. Our play-based, Reggio Emilia–inspired approach encourages children to ask questions, develop their own ideas, collaborate with others, and explore the world through hands-on experiences. Teachers thoughtfully observe and support each child’s individual interests, creativity, social-emotional development, and growing independence.
Our Classrooms
Different ages. Different stages. One BFS community.
Each child grows and develops at their own pace. Our classrooms are thoughtfully composed to create supportive communities where children can build relationships with peers and teachers while receiving individualized attention. Classroom placement is primarily based on a child’s age at the beginning of the school year, along with enrollment and the overall composition of each classroom. Age ranges may vary slightly from year to year.
🐞 Jitterbug 2-year-olds
A nurturing introduction to preschool where children begin building relationships, developing independence, and discovering the joy of learning through play.
🪻 Dragonfly 3-year-olds
A playful, engaging classroom that supports growing independence, communication, friendships, and curiosity through hands-on exploration.
☀️ Sunshine Pre-K 4s
A dynamic classroom community where children build independence, strengthen relationships, and explore increasingly complex ideas through projects, play, and shared experiences.
🌈 Rainbow Pre-K 4s
A rich, engaging learning environment where children develop confidence, independence, and a strong sense of community as they continue to grow as curious, confident learners.
🦋 Butterfly Older 3-year-olds and Pre-K 4s
A collaborative classroom where children deepen friendships, expand their ideas, and develop confidence as learners through play, conversation, and creative exploration.
Staying Connected
Teachers regularly share classroom experiences with families through photos, narratives, and classroom updates. These glimpses into the day help families understand not only what children are exploring, but also the thinking, relationships, and discoveries happening along the way.
