Admissions Process Explained
Returning Students & Alumni Families: Current students and siblings of current or former students receive priority for open slots, before the general lottery.
New Families: All new families will be selected by lottery. To be included in our initial lottery, families must submit an online application and $100 application fee by January 16, 2026.
The Lottery: Our Lottery will be held on January 23, 2026: Applications submitted up until January 22, 2026 will be included in the lottery.
Admissions decisions are made through a director administered ‘blind-lottery’, which factors in the balance of each classroom's age and gender, as well as family make up and racial diversity.
Waitlist: After seats are initially filled, we will continue the lottery process to create our waitlist. Applications submitted after the lottery date will be added to the end of our waitlist in the order they received.
Families applying to Pre-K: Please complete a BFS Application (no application fee) along with the DOE application when it opens putting our program as your first choice! See the DOE Pre-K schedule below:

Tuition & Fees
Initial paperwork and Deposits due by February 3, 2026. Second Deposits, including first month's tuition and materials fee due by March 27, 2026.
Enrollment Fees for the 2026-2027 School Year
Application Fee - $100 Fee charged with BFS Application. Fee waived for returning families and Pre-K For All.
Registration Deposit - $2,750 full day tuition. (Due with signed Membership Agreement, along with Membership Fee). This fee is non-refundable.
Membership Fee - $600 (per child). Due with the registration deposit. Refundable, upon request, the October after your child has left the school, provided you have no outstanding balance.
Annual Materials Fee* - $1000 annually. Due by March 27th, along with your September (1st month) tuition payment.
First Month Tuition Payment - $2,750 (full day). Due by March 27th, along with your Annual Materials Fee.
*The Annual Materials fee contributes to the cost of classroom supplies, arts and crafts materials, school supplies, daily snacks and other consumables.
School Day for the 2026-2027 School Year
Full day Jitterbug, Dragonfly and Butterfly M-F (9 am - 3 pm): $2,750 per month
Full day Pre-K Sunshine and Rainbow M-F (8:50 am - 3:10 pm): free of charge
Extended Day
Extended Day care is billed per month for each day of attendance. Parents pre-register for days of week (Mondays, Tuesdays, etc.)
Early Bird Care (8 - 9 am): *$20 per day (pre-registered, by day of week) (Ad hoc rate $30)
After School Care (3 - 6 pm): *$50 per day (pre-registered, by day of week) (Ad Hoc Rate $65)
Grace Period (3 - 3:30 pm): *$15 per day (pre-registered, by day of week)

Financial Aid
Brooklyn Free Space offers financial aid in the form of tuition reduction of 10-50% to new and returning qualifying families according to financial need. Funds are limited, but we invite all in need to apply.
Who Qualifies?
While BFS encourages applications for tuition reduction from all families that feel they need assistance, tuition reduction is typically offered to families whose annual household income is below $100,000.
To Apply
Families interested in applying for financial aid must submit a Parents Financial Statement (PFS) through National Association of Independent Schools' School and Student Services (SSS). There is a $60.00 fee to fill out the online application. If this fee presents a hardship for you, please contact admissions@brooklynfreespace.org and we can provide you with a fee waiver, if available. Our school code is 3924. BFS determines eligibility for admission without regard to a student’s application for financial aid, but please indicate that you are seeking financial assistance on your bfs application.
If your name is chosen in our initial Lottery, we will ask families who have indicated interest to review and submit their aid applications within one week. At that point, we will present you with a FA offer. We encourage families to fill this application out before the lottery or directly after the lottery to be sure that their application is complete as soon as possible. Families awarded aid will be asked to submit a copy of the past 2 years federal and state income tax returns.
