Our annual Open House and admissions deadline have passed for the 2012-2013 school year. Families that submitted applications before the deadline will receive their initial admissions notifications on February 28. We are still accepting applications for our wait list (download the application). To apply for the wait list, please submit a completed application and the $45 application fee to the school. We look to the wait list to fill vacancies that may arise during the admissions process and later in the school year. Please contact us with questions about the admissions process.

Brooklyn Free Space values diversity in its membership and staff, and strives to ensure that the school population represents families and children from diverse backgrounds.

We select new members by a director-administered lottery; a waiting list is created based on this lottery. Brooklyn Free Space balances classes by age and gender. Current students and siblings of current or former students receive priority for open slots, before the general lottery. Seats not filled from the lottery or the waiting list will be filled on a first-come, first-served basis as applications are received.

To accept the admission offer and secure a place in the next class, families must sign a Statement of Agreement and provide a check representing one month's tuition, as well as a copy of the child's birth certificate. A check representing a second month's tuition will be due at a later date. Deposit monies will be applied to January and June tuition for the following school year.

There is an earlier deadline for applications from families with BFS alumni or continuing students, noted below in the Admissions Calendar. These families are encouraged to contact the New Members Committee with questions or to request a current copy of the Statement of Agreement.

Parents of children who are admitted to Brooklyn Free Space and age-eligible for Universal Pre-Kindergarten (UPK) will be asked to complete additional enrollment paperwork specific to UPK.  The UPK enrollment paperwork is due to the NYC Department of Education in the fall in order for BFS to receive funding for each UPK-eligible child.

Hours
All children enroll for a five-day week. Full-day students attend from 9 am to 3 pm. Half-day students (Jitterbug and Dragonfly classrooms only) attend from 9 am to 12:30 pm.

Part of our children-first philosophy is that a daily routine fosters a comforting sense of belonging and order for young children. We also offer Early Bird (8–9 am) and After School care (3–6 pm), which can be booked in advance or on an ad hoc basis for an additional fee. Extended Grace Period (3-4 pm) can also be arranged in advance. These are great options for working parents.

The Jitterbug and Dragonfly Rooms offer both half-day and full-day placements. A maximum of 4 children in each of these rooms can be half-day.

The Lourdes Torres-Shepard Fund
Brooklyn Free Space offers financial aid in the form of reduced tuition to families who could otherwise not afford to attend. These efforts are supported through the Lourdes Torres-Shepard Fund, which was established in 2008 in honor of BFS's former Educational Director. Through the Lourdes Fund, tuition reduction of 10-50% is awarded to new and returning families according to financial need, based on review of financial information submitted through the National Association of Independent Schools' School and Student Services (SSS) program. While BFS encourages applications for tuition reduction from all families that feel they need assistance, tuition reduction is typically offered to families whose annual household income is below $75,000.
